Rastafarianism

Religious and political movement originated in the Jamaican cult which worships the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I (the Ras Tafari, that is, the Prince Tafari, 1892-1975). The movement was influenced by political black activists of the 1930s, mainly by Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), who tried to recover Africa for the black race or people. Rastafarianism combines African religious, ideas about the supremacy of the black people and biblical narratives with the Afro-Caribbean culture. The movement has neither churches nor priests, and the ritual practice is spontaneous. They use certain symbols to define themselves: the hair style, the use of the Ethiopian national colors (red, black, green and golden), eating habits (they avoid meat and pork), etc. Reggae, a type of Jamaican popular music, is specially used to disseminate the rastafarian ideas.
